Junior Blair Smith is raising funds for 7th-grade student Kahrson Hoveland, who was diagnosed with LCH, a cancer-like condition in his lungs.
“He is like a little brother to me,” Smith said.
Smith spent hours baking sugar-sprinkled cookies, butterscotch brownies, and chocolate brownies to sell at a recent bake sale fundraiser. Smith, who herself had to endure cancer at the age of seven, said she was heartbroken when she found out Hoveland was undergoing treatments for a third time.

“I got really upset and wanted to find any way to help him out to make it less stressful on him and his whole family,” Smith said. “I already know it’s hard, and been going through twice already, I wanted to help him as much as I could.”
Smith said she has known Kahrson for five years and appreciates the donations from high school students who wanted to contribute toward the bake sale. She set it up in the commons before and after school.
“I like how people are so supportive with everything,” Smith said. “If I put it out and say I’m doing this for good reason, some people are willing to buy a ton of stuff so I can raise a lot of money to help.”
Smith said she wanted to reach a minimum goal of $500, but she hit the $650 mark.
