Thirty-five new students were inducted into the National Honor Society this month.
The National Honor Society has inducted thirty five new members recently at Mason City High School. It is a big accomplishment that most don’t get into.
“It is a big deal,” said Michelle Buseman, MCHS advisor. “You must show good character, be involved in extra activities, do community service, and maintain a very high GPA until you graduate high school.”

Students must maintain a 3.75 GPA. National Honor Society was created more than a hundred years ago to recognize and encourage academic achievement and other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. The four pillars of the NHS are: scholarship, character, service, and leadership.
“I’m thankful for all the support from the staff at the school,” Daelyn Genzler a junior who just inducted. “I’m also thankful for all of the opportunities provided to me by my school and community.”

One of the main benefits of the NHS is that it makes students more eligible for scholarships.
“It feels great to be recognized for my hard work and my accomplishments,” Sophia Schoneberg a junior who’s been out for track and volleyball, “As I have put much time and effort into my academics and extracurricular activities.”

Pillar of community service
Community service is a big part of being chosen for the National Honor Society. New member Will Schissel helps out at a soccer camp; he says it connects him to the community.
“I got to lead some drills and help younger soccer players improve their skills while also having fun competitions,” said Schissel. “My most memorable moments of this soccer camp were during competitions, watching all of the kids celebrate when they won or laughing when they lost.”

Schoneberg was also recognized for helping lead a youth group for kids within her church. They make Christmas gifts and clean up trash around Mason City.
“I have been leading this program for a couple years and it has really benefited me in various ways,” said Schoneberg. “I get to make my own lessons for the kids, which in turn makes my faith grow as well.”
Eligibility For Membership
To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been in attendance for a period of at least one semester at MCHS or Mason City Virtual Academy. While also carrying a full-time course load of five credit hours or more per semester. NHS was founded in 1921.
