It’s that time of year. Students are decorating the gym and turning it into a “Woods of Wonder” for Saturday’s long-awaited prom.“We wanted to do something different,” said Kerri Foley, Prom Committee Advisor. “We’d done a lot of cities and towns, like “Hollywood” and “Viva Las Vegas” in the past, and just kind of wanted to do a different vibe of just some greenery and very natural, whimsical, soft lighting. So yeah, that’s what we’re going for, fingers crossed.”
On Friday, the decorating started with emerald green fabric draped along the gymnasium ceiling and a shiny disco ball hanging from the middle. Walking out into the atrium, students from the prom committee set up big white trees, a backdrop for photos, and Christmas trees donated from families in the community.
“There were some girls in my algebra two class earlier talking about how hyped they are,” said Max Shelton, Junior, “Like, they’re ecstatic!”
Lilliane Boelman has been one of many students planning for the big dance since last November. She hadn’t thought about taking part in the preparations for her senior year until she was caught off guard last fall in Target by Foley, the committee adviser.
“Foley saw me in Target one time, um playing with the light Sabers with my friend,” said Boelman. “She’s like, you’re gonna go to the prom committee meeting tomorrow, right? And like uh, I guess.”
“We started by picking a theme and snacks,” said Foley. “Snacks were very important.”
All kidding aside, students on the committee are enjoying preparing this milestone for their fellow high school students.
“Because we get to be with all of our friends after school, because we usually have to work or we’re busy with homework,” said senior Joseline Juarez, “So just having time to like spend together and creating something that’s gonna last, at least in all of our memories.”
Prom begins Saturday with a Grand March in the MCHS Atrium from 7-8. The dance is from 8-11. Tickets will not be available at the door.
