Tonight, The Mason City Girls Wrestling Team will host the 2A Regionals in the Mason City Gymnasium. There will be around 8 teams competing to go to state including Cedar Rapids Washington, Clear Lake, Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, Waterloo West, Waverly-Shell Rock, and Webster City.
Coach Jake Phillips says the team has eyes on winning some state titles.
“I have nerves all the time,” said Phillips, “All the work I’m doing right now that’s done. The girls need to go compete. They do that consistently. I’m nervous because I’m not in control of how they’re going to compete but I feel like they’re more prepared than anybody else.”
Aniyah Smith is a sophomore who placed 2nd in the 235 weight class at last weekend’s Upper Northern Iowa Tournament. She says the team has been focused on mindset.
“All of us have doubts going into state qualifiers, and actual state,” said Smith. “But I think all of us and our mindsets are pretty good right now. For wrestling you have to have a good mindset; just to be able to wrestle your best. Otherwise, it’s your downfall from there.”
Regionals will start at 5:00 P.M tonight.
