The Key Club hosted a fundraising event during conferences Thursday night to raise money for the UNICEF-run Integrated Early Childhood Development program in Zambia.
This fundraising effort is part of a larger fundraiser started by Key Club International, the leading organization for global Key Club chapters. “It feels good to be a part of something that is such a big cause,” said MCHS Key Club president Kaitlyn Thangaraj.
Key Club sold baked goods, made hot chocolate, and painted faces to raise money to improve early childhood education for young students in Zambia. With tables set up in the fieldhouse atrium and in the commons, fundraisers made use of the unusual traffic in the school due to parent-teacher conferences, youth basketball, and a conference swim meet.

The bake sale included a variety of “fall-themed” goods, including pumpkin breads and bars, chai cookies, and scotcharoos, purchasable for a few dollars.
Thangaraj said that the fundraiser raised around $250 to be donated to the education effort.
The need for these funds is tremendous. According to an article published on the UNICEF website, “Urgent action is needed to address these challenges and ensure that every child can succeed.”
This kind of project isn’t unique in Key Club events. “Key Club does events and activities like this all the time,” she said. “We’re having a blast, we’re hanging out, and we’re also doing something positive in our school and community.”
Thangaraj encourages anyone interested to join Key Club. “Being a part of Key Club gives you an opportunity to be involved in fun service activities like this while also making a positive impact,” she said.
