On Friday mornings, senior Devon McKee has one thing on his mind: stop by the Riverhawk Bakery for a sweet scotcheroo. It’s becoming a highlight of his week.
“Every Friday,” said McKee, “Well, not every Friday, but, you know, fairly often.”
The bakery, run by Culinary III students, is now open from 8 to 8:30 a.m. on Friday mornings.
“There’s always a line no matter when you go,” said 11th grader, Elise Dykstra.
By 8:25, the line is out the door and down the hall.
“Our first bakery of the year went great!” said Culinary Arts instructor, Samantha Bullington. “We had a great turnout of customers and sold out of almost all of our items!”
Bullington says Culinary Arts students don’t just go straight to selling.
“The students prepare for the bakery the first month and a half of school by learning about costing out a recipe and figuring out how much to sell each item for,” said Bullington. “They then practice making the most popular items that we sell. We then go through the first-morning bakery process of making smoothies, making breakfast burritos, and then learning how to do the cash register.”
This year’s menu includes Bacon and Cheese Egg Bites, Breakfast Burritos, and Strawberry Banana Smoothies. Prices range from $1-4.
