On Thursday, the Riverhawks boys’ basketball team celebrated the end of the basketball season and wished many seniors their good wells for their future ahead.
Mason City had many accomplishments as a team and on the individual level. One of the biggest individual accomplishments was Senior Marcele Whitner, who joined the 1000-point club. The exclusive club only tracks points made from the varsity level, and only 6 athletes have done so in the history of Mason City. What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is Whitner accomplished the 1000 mark in only three years, which he’s the only player in the group to do that.
Riverhawk Press writer Jeffrey Landrigan interviewed Whitner, to get a sense of how this feels for him, but also how it feels to have his dad there by his side in the program and what his future is looking like.
Whitner is playing one last high school event this weekend as he heads to the exclusive Pizza Ranch All-Star Game at Dallas Center-Grimes on March 28th This will be his last high school event, and he will be glad to be coached by Coach Nicholas Trask for the last time. Whitner has drawn interest from several college programs, including an offer from Briar Cliff University in Sioux City and an official visit to Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville. With signing periods approaching in April and late May, a decision is expected in the coming weeks. Fans can go to his X or Twitter account @MarceleWhitner.
