Cedar Falls, IA — The University of Northern Iowa hosted the Iowa High School Model United Nations (IHSMUN) Spring Conference on March 26–27, bringing together student delegates from across the state for two days of diplomacy, debate, and collaboration. Mason City students took part under the guidance of advisor Rich Lorence.
The conference provided an immersive Model UN experience for high school students, allowing them to step into the roles of diplomats representing United Nations member countries. Delegates prepared detailed position papers in accordance with IHSMUN guidelines, demonstrating their understanding of historical and current events, national policies, and international relations.
“This event gives students the opportunity to engage deeply with global issues, practice diplomacy, and develop public speaking and research skills that will serve them well in the future,” Lorence said.
Throughout the two-day event, students participated in committees simulating real United Nations sessions, discussing global issues such as security and economic development. Each delegate presented their country’s position, proposed resolutions, and negotiated with other nations to build consensus.
MCHS students represented the countries of Pakistan and Ajerbaijan.
Beyond the formal sessions, students reflected on their personal growth and experiences during the conference.

“I gained new friends and learned about new countries,” said junior Peyton Bobolz. She also stated that she gained a better understanding of how politics work and the process of making laws. While Bobolz does not plan to major in politics, she expressed interest in participating in Model UN in college and becoming a voter once she turns 18.
Senior Graceleigh Bolinger said the experience helped her better understand global events and broaden her perspective on world affairs.
“This year, I gained more confidence in speaking with students from other schools while discussing global issues that affect all the countries we were representing,” said Bolinger, “Overall, Model UN helped me get out of my shell, learn new things, and improve my public speaking skills.”
The position papers, reviewed by the IHSMUN Secretariat, served as the foundation for debate and decision-making during the conference.
The IHSMUN Secretariat, led by Secretary General Kara Ouverson and Advisor Heather Schaffner, ensured that all position papers met required standards and provided guidance to both students and advisors. The conference also included awards for Outstanding Position Papers, recognizing students who demonstrated exceptional knowledge, analytical skills, and professionalism.
