The Riverhawk Girls Soccer Season is starting soon. Although they won’t have official numbers until later this week, coaches say turnout looks good this year.
“We’ve got a ton of girls showing up to open gyms and out-of-season opportunities,” Assistant Coach Emily Bruns said.
Last year, 50 girls signed up for the team and their record was 10-7-1.
“One of my favorite things about soccer is how much time I get to spend with my teammates. We have a lot of fun every year both on the field and off,” Senior Elise Dykstra said, “It’s a really cool community and I’m really excited to get to know this year’s team.”
Sophomore Magali Gonzalez is also looking forward to returning. She says the team atmosphere helps bring her back.
“Everyone came together [last year] with a common goal, and within the team we had a sense of family,” said Gonzalez, “The team was probably my favorite thing from soccer last season, making friends for a lifetime.”
Freshman Paige Frels is looking forward to experiencing what it’s like to be on a high school team. “I’m most excited to grow with my teammates and get to know more people,” said Frels
Head Coach Shannon Dykstra says there are 11 returning letterwinners, and they will play 17 matches inside the season.
“We work on all relevant soccer skills, while also emphasizing personal and team habits that translate into success in all areas of life,” Dykstra said.
Practices will start Monday, March 23rd and will be every day from 4-6 pm, unless they have a game that day. If you want to play soccer, don’t miss out on the opportunities you would get from joining the girls’ soccer team.
