For Mason City High School freshman Penelope Scott, the starting line isn’t just a place to begin a race; it’s a place to find her community. Her enthusiasm for the sport is as unwavering as her stride. She credits her middle school gym teacher, Mr. Hardcastle, for introducing her to the sport.
“He’s just really good at projecting out and spreading the word about cross country, and I was like, ‘This really sounds fun!’ and I just love it,” Scott said.
Scott’s commitment to running is evident in her long-term goals.
“I’ve been doing it for two years now, and I don’t think I’ll ever stop,” Scott stated confidently. This passion extends to her future, as she hopes to continue her running career into college.
Balancing Acts and Race Day Routines
Scott manages her time by participating in wrestling and track, while also being an active member of Girl Scouts. Despite her busy schedule, she ensures she finds time for homework and family.
“A lot of the things, like cross country, are just after school: 4-6 (p.m.), and meets are regular days, not really interfering with a lot of the things I do,” Scott said.
When it comes to preparing for a race, Scott has a clear routine. She goes to bed around 8:30 p.m., even on weekends, and drinks water up until 30 minutes before she runs.
“That’s just my way of preparing so I don’t get a side stitch,” Scott said. “Probably doesn’t work for all, but it works for me.”
First in the Family
Scott’s cross-country journey is a unique one for her family.
“No one else in my family ran cross country; I’m the first runner,” Scott said. “My mom is always like: ‘Oh yeah, she’s our first runner’ whenever she talks to family at family gatherings.”
For other aspiring athletes, Scott’s advice is simple and inspiring.
“I just stay consistent with it. It’s really fun once you get into it. If you stay consistent with it, the better you get. It’s just a lot of fun and you meet really nice people, and a lot of my friends came from sports I do, especially cross country.”
Scott encourages others to join Cross Country.
