The girls’ golf season is officially underway. Their first big meet is against Waverly at Highland Golf Course in Mason City on April 9th. There are 17 girls on the team this year, including two middle school girls.
Head coach Kim Berding is starting out practice with a focus on hand placement skills along with sportsmanship.
“Additional skills that we talk about right away in the beginning are honesty and integrity. Because with golf, you don’t have a referee out there.” Berding said, ”You don’t have anybody refereeing you, you are to be honest about your shots.”

Berding referred to the team as relatively new, with only five returning players. The team was also described as young, with most girls being sophomores.
“I’m excited for my first year because I get to get close with the team and learn new skills from the coaches,” said sophomore Harper Markee.
First-time player and senior Madalyn Chose has advice for people just starting out.
“I just say, just go for it,” said Chose, “Don’t think twice about it. And if you hate it, it’s only one season, and you can move on. But at least you experienced it, and at least you know you don’t like it, or you do like it.”
