The Mason City Girls Swim team emerged victorious against Des Moines East Tuesday. Several swimmers achieved noteworthy individual performances along the way. Junior Kayla Eide took first place in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:20.6) and the 50-yard freestyle (27.47), while senior Lauryn Halverson secured victories in the 200-yard individual medley (2:28.36) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:57.21).
“It went really, really well!” said Eide who has seven years of swim experience.
Despite starting with three losses, the team remains positive and continues to improve. “I’m excited to watch everyone improve and cheer them on,” said
Eide.
The season kicked off on August 27th in Marshalltown, followed by meets in Decorah and Ames, with the Riverhawks coming up short each time. Despite the results, swimmers report steady improvement.
The team hosted its first annual Riverhawk Invitational this year where they outscored three other teams. Swimmers say the new pool at Mason City High, built last year, is also attracting talent, with eight swimmers joining from outside the district.
As the season reaches its halfway point, the team is shifting focus to race speed and filling nine individual events with three competitors each. Coach Steve Hugo praised the team’s effort, saying, “I’m enjoying watching motivated athletes challenge one another to beat the clock.”
