On Tuesday, the Mason City Riverhawks tennis team had their first home meet against the Fort Dodge Dodgers. Mason City dominated against the Dodgers, winning 11-0. The Riverhawks are coming off a decent season last year, where they went 11-5 and lost in the 2nd round of the 2A Substate Tournament, 5-2 against the Marshalltown Bobcats. This year, Mason City looks to get back to the state tournament, as they did two years ago.
“Our goals for Riverhawk Boys Tennis do not ever change,” said Coach Patrick Kruger, “Our team goal is to win our substate tournament and advance to Team State Duals (top 8). Our individual goals for the players are to win the Individual District Tournament and qualify for the Individual State Tournament.”
The Riverhawks started the season with a blowout win against Des Moines Lincoln, 11-0. Mason City is bringing back everyone but 2025 graduate Max Lang, although they replace Lang really well with transfer student and former Clear Lake Lion, Senior, Leif Lundberg, a former number one player for his previous team.
“Joining this team has been a great privilege and opportunity,” said Lundberg. “Our team has the potential to achieve incredible goals, such as qualifying for team state and producing multiple individual state qualifiers, thanks to our depth, talent, and experience.”
Their next meet will be against Des Moines East on Thursday, April 9th at 4 p.m. at Waveland Park Tennis Courts in Des Moines. The Scarlets are coming off a loss against Marshalltown, 10-1. On Saturday, spectators can watch the Riverhawks at home. They play Waverly Shell Rock at 9 a.m and Decorah at 1 p.m.
