The Riverhawk Basketball varsity teams took on Des Moines North Tuesday in the first home game of the season.
The Riverhawk girls varsity team defeated the North side with a score of 43-3. Sophomore Magalli Gonzales led the team in scoring with 13 points. Leading in rebounds was senior Gracyn Braun with six, and in assists was sophomore Leah Dykstra with three. The girls held North scoreless until the fourth quarter.
The boys varsity lost in a heartbreaking 70-71 competition. The team trailed most of the game, but made a comeback in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime, when an overtime three pointer by North placed the possibility of a Riverhawk win just out of reach. Senior Ty Sanchez-Evans led boys’ side in points with 23, and in assists with five. Junior Owen Rickers led rebounds with eight.
All lower-level games were cancelled due to weather concerns. The next Riverhawk home game is Tuesday, Dec. 16 versus the Fort Dodge Dodgers.
